Each itinerary is packed with practical tips, suggested stops and links to in-depth guides – everything you need to plan a trip that runs smoothly and leaves room for spontaneity.

Note on Itinerary Lengths

For the itineraries with a set number of days, I’ve listed the minimum time I’d recommend to complete each route comfortably. If you have a few extra days, even better – adding in more time will let you explore each stop at a slower pace, detour when something catches your eye, or simply take a day off from driving when needed.

    🧭 Short Scenic Drives

A scenic highway curves along the edge of a turquoise lake, with snow-capped mountains in the background and grassy hills to the left. Several vehicles travel the road under a partly cloudy sky.
The approach to Lake Pukaki — the water really is that blue. Mount Cook (Aoraki) in the background.

Queenstown to Mount Cook Road Trip

Choose between two scenic routes: one via Wanaka and the Crown Range, the other via Cromwell and the Lindis Pass. Both reward you with dramatic alpine views and worthwhile stops along the way.

The first time I drove past Lake Pukaki years ago, I hadn’t planned to stop – but when I saw how bright the water was against the backdrop of the Southern Alps, I couldn’t resist. I found a safe place to turn around and pull into one of the parking areas. It ended up being one of my favourite photo stops of the whole trip.

On my recent trip I planned my route to include that stop.

Road Trip Tips for New Zealand

Before you hit the road, here are a few things to keep in mind to make your trip smoother and safer:

    • Check NZTA for road conditions and closures – especially after heavy rain or snow. Their journeys page has up-to-date alerts.
    • Check DOC alerts if you’re planning to hike or visit national parks – the Department of Conservation website lists closures, warnings and track conditions by region.
    • Be aware of alpine pass closures in winter – roads like the Crown Range or Lindis Pass can close due to snow or ice, and chains may be required.
    • Drive on the left – it sounds obvious, but it’s worth double-checking your instincts when turning or pulling out. I once came across a car driving straight towards me on the wrong side of the road near Mount Cook – luckily we both had time to react, but it was a good reminder to stay alert.
    • Allow more time than you think – the roads are scenic but often winding, and you’ll want to stop often for photos or short walks. Earlier this year I drove from Blenheim to Kaikōura in torrential rain, rushing to make a whale watching tour (which ended up being cancelled).

Even with the time pressure, I had to slow right down — a good reminder to always allow more time than you think you’ll need.
    • Fuel up in small towns – especially in more remote areas of the South Island where petrol stations can be far apart.
    • Be considerate of other drivers – many highways are one lane in each direction. If there’s a queue forming behind you, pull over in a safe place to let others pass. I’m not a particularly slow driver, but I’ve still pulled over on occasion to let locals past — they know the roads far better and tend to drive them with more speed and confidence than first-time visitors.

If you’re behind a slow vehicle, don’t rush overtaking – only do it when you have a clear view well ahead.
    • Respect one-lane bridges and give way rules – these are common in rural New Zealand and usually clearly signed.

Many popular New Zealand driving routes are scenic but deceptively slow – go with the flow, check the weather, and you’ll be in for a brilliant drive.

Ferry Capacity is Reduced – Book Early

If your itinerary includes crossing between the North and South Islands, make sure to book the ferry in advance. One of the Interislander ferries was taken out of service in summer 2025, so there’s currently less capacity and sailings often book out, especially in peak season.

The other major ferry company between the islands is Bluebridge.
