What Would Your British Village Name Be?

Some village names in the UK sound like someone lost a bet. Others are so specific you start wondering who exactly was involved and why. Either way, there’s a certain charm to the format: Something-on-the-Something or Somewhere-upon-Somewhere. It’s all very muddy lanes, low beamed pubs, and a healthy dose of “mind the ducks” energy.

So, in the spirit of deeply unnecessary fun, I’ve created a British Village Name Generator based entirely on your initials. It’s ridiculous. It’s pointless. And it’s 100% worth the next two minutes of your day.

What’s Yours?

Whether you ended up in Frimpton-on-the-Snout or Bibble-upon-Jam, your new fictional village awaits. Feel free to tell your friends, update your return address, or just live in peaceful knowledge that you are now spiritually a resident of Crumble-on-the-Ferret.

Real UK Place Names That Sound Completely Made Up

If you think these names sound utterly ridiculous, the real ones aren't that different! The UK is full of genuine place names that would get laughed out of a fiction writing workshop. Some favourites:

  • Wetwang – East Yorkshire
  • Pratt’s Bottom – Kent
  • Upper Thong – West Yorkshire
  • Dull – Perthshire (which is actually twinned with Boring, Oregon)
  • Cocking – West Sussex
  • Scratchy Bottom – Dorset
  • No Place – County Durham
  • Loose – Kent (just down the road from Coxheath)

And yes, there’s a Twatt in both Shetland and Orkney. The UK does not mess around when it comes to geography-based giggling.

🧐 British Village Name Generator FAQ

Are these real British village names?

Nope — they’re entirely fictional (but they could be real). That’s half the fun. They’re inspired by actual UK place names, though, so if you’ve ended up in something like Thistlewick-on-Mud, don’t be surprised if it sounds familiar.

How does the generator work?

It’s all based on your initials — one letter for the start, one for the end, although of course you can use any letters you want to. I’ve created a bunch of charming, ridiculous combos to match, so your result is just quirky enough to sound authentic.

Can I use this name in a story, DnD campaign, or game?

Yes! Please do. These names are free to use for whatever you want — fantasy writing, roleplaying, naming your Animal Crossing village, or just confusing your friends. Go wild.

Can I share my result?

Absolutely. Share your fictional village name in the comments, on social media, or write it in cursive on some parchment if you’re feeling particularly period-accurate.
